Born in April 1848, Raja Ravi Varma is considered to be one of the greatest painters in the history of Indian Art. Known as the 'Father of Modern Indian Art' Varma's paintings revolve primarily around the great Indian epics- Mahabharta and Ramayana.
Raja
Ravi Varma travelled
throughout his career hoping to find the inspiration and interesting subjects
for his paintings. He showed special interest in painting South Indian women.
He often painted his close kin which gained them popularity through his art.
Some of his paintings included his daughter ‘Mahaprabha’ which her
children.
The artist
beautifully depicted the amalgamation of Indian subjects with European techniques.
The richness of colour palette along with brilliant brushstrokes not only captivates
its viewer’s attention but also transport them into a whole new world. He brilliantly
brought the detailing and realism into Indian imagery with a delicate interplay
of light and shadows.
Though a protégé
of Royalty who was known for his portraits of Kings, Queens and Aristocrats,
Raja Ravi Varma was also the first to make lithographs of his artworks affordable
and easily available to the masses.
The highly
acclaimed artist started his career at a very young age and soon enjoyed the widespread
recognition and have influenced generations of artists.
