What is a Mural Painting?

The word ‘Mural’ comes from a Latin word ‘Murus’ which means a wall. Mural painting is a piece of graphic artwork that is painted or applied directly on to the wall. Murals are the oldest form of art in the world. These paintings date back to the prehistoric times. The oldest murals are associated with modern man, who first appeared in Africa around 200,000 BC.

Some of the most common techniques of mural paintings are frescos, graffiti, mosaic and marouflage. Murals are primarily created in public spheres and are usually huge in size. The subjects may vary but are often used to convey a socio-political agenda, day to day lives of the people, or as a tribute to an important event. One of the most important features of mural painting is that they are often used to portray the important episode for a city or state.
